“Bread in St. Louis has improved mightily in the past decade. And though we applaud hometown hero Companion for its success, we searched beyond the big guys to find other interesting options.

Black Bear Bakery

Its products are also found at Global Foods Market and farmers’ markets. The unseeded pumpernickel is as good as anything in New York. 314-771-2236.

Cham Bakery

This spot in The Grove turns out delectable pita bread. Sold in the bakery at many Dierbergs and other locations listed on Cham’s website, its products are worth seeking out.

Aryana Market

Large discs of Afghan bread can be found here late on most mornings. We vote for the big-dimpled wheel, brushed with butter and sprinkled with sesame seeds. 314-352-4999.

A&M Bakery

Quietly serving European-style breads—including the margherita, a pan of huge rolls that are both soft and chewy—A&M is popular among St. Louisans in the know. Don’t miss the baguettes. 314-631-0231.

Red Fox Baking & Catering

Red Fox Baking & Catering still flies under the radar, but it is deeply serious about its bread. Available at farmers’ markets, Local Harvest Grocery, and Grove East Provisions, the sunflower and raisin specialty breads are great, but the baguette stuns. The bakery’s possibly the best in town, amazing proof of how good flour, water, salt, and yeast can taste. With or without some unsalted butter, it’s downright addictive.”
